Museum Dr. Guislain

If you ever find yourself wandering around Ghent (Belgium), make sure you visit the museum Dr. Guislain. The great lack of knowledge and information on mental healthcare in general and on psychiatry in particular was one of the principal reasons why a psychiatry museum was opened in 1986.

One of my favorite exhibitions was ‘Under Cover‘, works selected from among the world-famous Prinzhorn Collection (Heidelberg). Shortly after the First World War, the German art historian and psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn became fascinated with the quality of plastic art produced by patients living in psychiatric institutions. He was to collect some 5,000 works of art. But the collection was abused by the Nazi’s to build the exhibition “Degraded Art”.
